Ranking Members Pallone, Green, and DeGette Request Hearing on Measles Outbreak
(Washington, DC) – Today, Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone Jr., Health Subcommittee Ranking Member Gene Green, and Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Ranking Member Diana DeGette sent a letter to Chairmen Fred Upton, Joe Pitts, and Tim Murphy requesting a hearing on the current measles outbreak and preventative vaccinations. The measles outbreak that began at Disneyland in December has led to over 100 cases in14 states and Mexico.
Members are now calling for a hearing to examine the role of measles vaccines in preventing outbreaks, noting that “for the 42 patients for whom vaccination status is known, 34 were unvaccinated and three received partial vaccinations.” Prior to its current resurgence, the virus had been deemed eliminated in the year 2000. The resurgence is being traced to communities with groups of unvaccinated people.
